- I started teaching swimming in a voluntary role at the age of 15 (1965) at Lane Cove Pool where I was Club Captain of Lane Cove Swimming Club for many years. I started competing for Lane Cove Swimming Club at the age of 5. My favourite event was the mile race which no longer exists. I won the gold medal in the open mile race against all ages both men and women in 1972 when I was 12 years old. My favourite stroke has always been butterfly but my best stroke was always backstroke. I competed for many years for New South Wales. I gave up swimming competitively in my early teens to pursue judo and sailing but continued to swim for enjoyment and compete in ocean swims which I do to this day.
- Athletic achievement: to me my achievements are simply getting out and doing it (whatever it that might be on the day) and enjoying it. I participate in many activites – swimming, board paddling, outrigging, kayaking, sailing, adventure races, barefoot trail running, capoeira, cyclocross and the list goes on. By far my favourite sport is mountain bike riding and I love nothing more than being out in the wilds on my bike especially travelling at breakneck speeds. I compete in many mountain bike events but I do it for the enjoyment of the ride and the camaraderie of the amazing mountain biking fraternity.
- My fave pic: After tearing the rotator cuff in my shoulder in an accident I wasted a lot of energy being depressed and angry. I was told I would be unable to use my arm again without surgery followed by 12 months of rehabilitation and no sport. I decided to prove the doctors wrong and set myself a strict shoulder strengthening exercise regime starting with just an elastic band. I also set a goal of giving myself a handstand for Christmas. This photo is taken by my beautiful son Mitchell on Christmas Day 2013 on the beach my boys grew up on in Durras. It was the best Christmas present ever! I always give myself a goal for Christmas as there is no better gift in my eyes. This year’s is a doozy and makes me sick with nerves but I am so very chuffed at what I have achieved. The trail run photo was taken by my beautiful friend Ginny on our last trip together before she passed away from bowel cancer with no obvious symptoms. This epitomises the importance of living every day to the fullest.
- My favourite quote: Do you know what my favourite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.
- My favourite part of being a coach: meeting so many amazing and inspirational people and being privileged to witness each person’s growth and the attainment of their goals. Coaching teaches me so much about myself and makes me hungrier to learn more and take on different challenges.
