Meet founder, owner and Head Coach Joe Ward

As founder, owner and Head Coach of Manly Beach Running Club, Joe Ward brings over fifteen years of coaching experience and a lifetime of running knowledge to the community. Joe is a highly accomplished marathon runner and ultra runner, having represented Australia three times on the international stage and winning national championship titles in both 2023 and 2025.

With hundreds of races behind him, from 5km events to multi-day ultras, Joe understands the full spectrum of the running journey. His passion for running and fitness shapes every session he leads. Whether it’s guiding the pack at 5:30am, supporting ultra runners around the world, or working 1-to-1 with athletes, Joe’s focus is always the same: helping people discover what they’re truly capable of.

He believes in consistency, community, and the power of showing up, values that underpin everything at Manly Beach Running Club.

    Joe is undoubtedly one of IF NOT the best running coach ANYONE could ask for. Not only is he a good running coach- without trying he is a GREAT life coach. He understands what it takes to get the best out of every athlete regardless of their ability level. His dedication to not just the craft of running but more so the craft of life. I have learned so much from our catch up chats- often these chats stay from running and more about being a complete and better person which eventually leads back to running Joe has guided me though 4 races so far this year (2024) - each performance better than the one before. One race being a huge non scheduled PR for a trail half marathon. Words can not articulate the respect I have for Joe and I can guarentee that if you engage Joe as your running coach you will only move forward and be a better runner and person from that day forward

    Working with Joe has been a genuinely valuable experience. His coaching not only improved my running but also helped me grow in patience, discipline, and perspective. Joe brings a depth of wisdom and practical insight that makes you feel supported both as an athlete and as a person.     Joe is fantastic! He is super knowledgeable and was incredibly supportive and encouraging preparing me for my first marathon. He tailored the program to suit my goals and fitness level and always checked in to make sure I felt confident and prepared. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to do a marathon or become a better runner.

    I cannot recommend Coach Joe highly enough! His passion and enthusiasm for running are absolutely contagious, and his dedication to his clients is unmatched. From the moment I started training with Joe, I felt supported and motivated. Joe’s attention to detail in every aspect of my training plan was impeccable, ensuring that I stayed on track and most importantly, injury-free! What truly sets him apart is his ability to tailor the training to my unique needs and circumstances. After giving birth to my second child, I never imagined I could achieve such a significant milestone so soon. Thanks to Joe’s expert guidance and unwavering encouragement, I ran my first marathon just 8 months postpartum and completed it in under 3 hours and 45 minutes.     Joe coached me through my second marathon. He is super knowledgeable, passionate and extremely practical in his approach. I really enjoyed this process, which felt much less of a struggle than my previous marathon training regime. Joe is particularly strong on mindset which is awesome for someone like me who is relatively new to the world of marathons. Highly recommended if you’re looking for someone to help you break that PB time or just to fall in love with running again.
